CHESAPEAKE – Recently, after months of extensive research, planning and collaboration, Eric S. Neff, MD performed South Hampton Roads’ first total joint replacement (TJR) surgery in a free-standing, ambulatory surgery center. After a successful total knee replacement (TKR) procedure at the Surgery Center of Chesapeake, 844 Battlefield Blvd., Dr. Neff’s 63-year-old patient went home that afternoon for recovery.

An Orthopaedic Surgeon with Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Neff performed the same-day TKR with advanced anesthesia for pain management that included regional nerve blocks and non-opioid prescriptions. Neff used DePuy Synthes’ SIGMA Knee Systems with 3D technology and a customized joint from TruMatch Personalized Solutions. The whole procedure lasted a little more than an hour.

“I’m really glad I was able to help my patient meet his goals for this surgery,” said Dr. Neff. “He made it clear he wanted to minimize his out-of-pocket costs, streamline his recovery and get back to work. The ambulatory surgery center was a good fit for this patient and this knee replacement surgery.”

Dr. Neff’s patient said he is very pleased and feels that it’s “going a little bit easier” than the last knee surgery he had. “This time they had me up and walking five hours after surgery. The last one took five weeks.”

Prior to surgery, the patient was required to attend a class to learn the exercises that would be part of his at-home recovery. He also received education about preparing his home for post-surgical care. He should be able to complete his physical therapy at home in about six to eight weeks. Then he’ll be able to return to normal activity.

This total knee replacement success at the Surgery Center of Chesapeake means that Dr. Neff will be able to offer out-patient total knee replacement and recovery at home to other patients that meet the necessary criteria.
