Understanding Spine Anatomy and Function
The spine, or vertebral column, is a complex structure composed of 33 vertebrae, categorized into five regions:

- Cervical Spine: Consists of seven vertebrae (C1-C7) in the neck region, supporting the head’s weight and allowing for a wide range of motion.
- Thoracic Spine: Comprises 12 vertebrae (T1-T12) in the upper and mid-back, providing attachment points for the ribs and aiding in protecting vital organs.
- Lumbar Spine: Includes five vertebrae (L1-L5) in the lower back, bearing much of the body’s weight and enabling movements such as bending and twisting.
- Sacrum: Made up of five fused vertebrae, connecting the spine to the pelvis and supporting the upper body’s weight.
- Coccyx: Consists of four fused vertebrae, commonly known as the tailbone, serving as an attachment site for ligaments and muscles.
Between each vertebra lies an intervertebral disc, acting as a cushion to absorb shock and facilitate flexibility. The spine’s natural curves—cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis—contribute to balance and upright posture.
