Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists Celebrates 90th Anniversary

A Legacy of Excellence in Orthopaedic Care

Hampton Roads orthopaedic group honors founder who pioneered specialty in Tidewater area in Virginia 90 years ago

In 2022, Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists (AOS) proudly marked a historic milestone—its 90th anniversary as a trusted provider of orthopaedic care in Hampton Roads. From humble beginnings in the early 20th century to becoming the region’s largest orthopaedic group, AOS continues to honor its legacy while leading the way in modern musculoskeletal care.

Dr. Foy Vann: A Pioneer of Orthopaedics in Virginia

The foundation of AOS was laid in 1919, when Foy Vann, M.D. established his orthopaedic medical practice in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia. At a time when orthopaedics was still a developing specialty, Dr. Vann stood out as a visionary in the field, shaping the course of musculoskeletal medicine in the Tidewater area.

In 1928, Dr. Vann expanded his impact by launching the Crippled Children’s Clinic under the sponsorship of the Newport News Kiwanis Club. Over a span of 25 years, he provided care to more than 7,500 children suffering from musculoskeletal disorders—a contribution that profoundly shaped pediatric orthopaedic care in the region.

Leadership and Legacy: Founding the Virginia Orthopaedic Society

In 1933, Dr. Vann met with nine fellow surgeons in Lynchburg, Virginia, to help establish the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, further solidifying his leadership within the medical community. During World War II, he served as the sole orthopaedic consultant for the Tidewater region, offering expertise and guidance during a critical time.

Even after the war, Dr. Vann continued to dedicate countless hours to clinics across Hampton Roads, mentoring the next generation of physicians and expanding access to care. His commitment to community medicine set the standard for what would become the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists mission.

Continuing the Vann Legacy

In 1947, Dr. Vann’s son, John A. Vann, M.D., joined the practice on York Street in Norfolk, beginning a new chapter in the family’s medical legacy. Under their leadership, the practice steadily grew in size and scope, expanding services to meet the needs of a growing population.

Through decades of evolution, what began as a father-son practice has grown into today’s Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists—a group known for clinical excellence, advanced technology, and compassionate care. With specialists in spine, sports medicine, joint replacement, hand, foot and ankle, and more, AOS continues to lead orthopaedic care in Hampton Roads.

Honoring the Past. Advancing the Future.

As we reflect on 90 years of care, we honor the legacy of Dr. Foy Vann and Dr. John A. Vann—their compassion, innovation, and enduring commitment to patients. Today, AOS proudly carries that torch forward, offering advanced orthopaedic solutions that restore movement, reduce pain, and improve lives.

Thank you to our patients, partners, and community for being part of this remarkable journey. We look forward to continuing our mission for decades to come.
