This year the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) has partnered with the National Scoliosis Foundation (NSF) in order to promote the 2nd annual National Scoliosis Awareness Month. Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that that appearing during adolescent growth and affecting about 2-3 percent of the population. It occurs in people of every culture and at approximately the same incidence throughout all socioeconomic classes. Each year scoliosis patients make more than 600,000 trips to specialists for treatment related to their condition. Although there is no known cure, exercise, bracing and spinal fusion surgery can all improve a scoliosis patientís overall quality of life depending on the severity of their condition.

J. Abbott Byrd, III, M.D., Spine & Scoliosis Specialist of Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists has dedicated a large portion of his career to increasing awareness of and promoting research of this disorder. He completed his medical training with a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the prestigious Twin Cities Scoliosis Center in Minneapolis. Dr. Byrd is an active member of the SRS (2009-2010 Chair of the Bylaws/Policies and the Fellowship Committees), and the North American Spine Society where he is a frequent speaker.
