The Byrd Family Legacy
The Byrd family’s legacy in medicine is a remarkable testament to dedication, innovation, and service across three generations. Their deep-rooted connection to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia (MCV) and Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists (AOS) has significantly influenced the field of orthopaedic surgery and patient care in Hampton Roads.
A Family Tradition of Medical Excellence
Dr. J. Abbott Byrd III and Dr. Allison D. Byrd, both graduates of MCV’s Class of 1978, began their journey together during medical school. Their shared passion for medicine led to distinguished careers—Dr. Abbott Byrd as a pioneering spine surgeon and Dr. Allison Byrd as an internal medicine physician. Their commitment to advancing medical education and research culminated in the establishment of the Allison D. and J. Abbott Byrd III Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at MCV in 2014, aimed at enhancing research and academic achievement in orthopaedic specialties.
The Byrd family’s medical legacy traces back to Dr. Abbott Byrd III’s parents—his father, Dr. John Byrd Jr., a member of MCV’s Class of 1947, and his mother, Louana Byrd, who graduated from the School of Nursing in 1948. This lineage underscores a profound, multigenerational commitment to healthcare and education. MCV Foundation
The Next Generation: Drs. Jennifer and William Byrd
Continuing the family tradition, Drs. Jennifer M. Byrd and William A. Byrd joined AOS in 2019, bringing fresh perspectives to the practice.
- Dr. Jennifer Byrd, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, focuses on knee and shoulder injuries. A former collegiate athlete at Princeton University, she holds the school’s indoor long jump record and served as team captain. Her athletic background fuels her dedication to helping patients return to their active lifestyles.
- Dr. William Byrd, also board-certified, specializes in total joint replacement, with a focus on complex hip and knee reconstructions. His academic journey took him from Princeton to VCU for medical school, followed by an orthopaedic residency at Duke University and a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Southern Joint Replacement Institute. His approach combines technical precision with a deep understanding of patient needs.
Their sister, Catherine Byrd, contributes to the family’s commitment to service as an attorney in Virginia Beach, further exemplifying the Byrd family’s dedication to their community.
A Lasting Impact on Orthopaedic Care
Dr. J. Abbott Byrd III’s tenure at AOS was marked by significant advancements in spine surgery. In 1984, he co-developed the PWB spinal implant system, leading to the creation of the first variable-angle pedicle screw, a groundbreaking innovation in spinal instrumentation. This device is now part of the Kansas University Spine and Orthopedic Historical Collections.
Under his leadership as President of AOS from 2002 to 2018, the practice expanded to include 23 physicians and nearly 200 staff members across multiple locations, solidifying its reputation as a premier orthopaedic group in the region.
The Byrd family’s enduring commitment to medicine, education, and community service continues to inspire and shape the future of orthopaedic care in Hampton Roads and beyond
